This weekend Tim and I changed up our usual run and ended up at Fort Stevens Park. Ever since we moved into the house (almost a year ago!) we've talked about paying the park a visit. Due to the ever encroaching development of our neighborhood and the others around it, Fort Stevens is considered to be one of the most endangered Civil War battlefields. The fort was part of DC's defenses during the war and was attacked by Confederate soldiers in 1864. During the attack, President Lincoln became the only president in history to come under direct enemy fire when he rode out to observe the battle.
It is definitely an underrated DC gem, despite the fact that it is only partially restored. The rolling bunkers are fun to walk around and the hill provides a neat view of our Northwest corner of the city.
