Chatype

A friend of mine sent me an article yesterday about Chattanooga, Tennessee and how it is about to become the first city in our nation to have its own font. Started by a group of designers and businessmen, the goal of the Chatype campaign is to unify the city and its businesses under one identity.

This method of using custom typography to market a town has been utilized by small cities in Europe for years. And it only seems natural in a place like Chattanooga, home to two of the world's practicing typeface designers. Chatype, a "geometric slab serif" font, will appear throughout the city (on street signs, police cars, etc.) and will be available for local businesses to download.

The campaign sounds genius and I can't wait to see how it all pans out. Plus, I'm already taken with the font and their marketing materials (see below). Well done, Chattanooga.
